Well quite typically as I come to write this post my top coat has let me down by performing wonderfully! The winner of this test (I shall not post spoilers ;)) has held up against an evening of cleaning and getting dowsed in all sorts of lovely chemicals with barely any damage. Annoying as I only did my nails yesterday but want to do them again tomorrow and was hoping for the excuse of “oh but the cleaning ruined them”. Guess I’ll have to stick with the “I want to do my nails” excuse instead.

I decided to do this test a couple of months ago as I was mildly disappointed to find that my A England top coat (The Shield) was starting to go gloopy halfway down the bottle. Highly disappointed actually as the top coat itself is fantastic right up until that point. So I thought I would test it against a cheap one (Barry M Base + Top Coat in One) and another indie one that my friend loves (Rica’s Glossy Glam).

So here we go, I applied them over an existing manicure that had no top coat on it and wore it for 6 days. You can’t really tell properly in the pictures but The Shield by A England looked the best – I got the most compliments on that nail. Glossy Glam by Rica looked almost as good and Barry M’s 2 in 1… well it didn’t have half the shine. But how would they hold up?

A England has chipped! Minimal tip wear on all of them though.

A England’s “The Shield” – I normally wear this and struggle to get it off. I’ve had studs on for 7 days that were only attached with this top coat that I literally struggled to prise off. However typically as I was doing a test this actually chipped within 2 days. The finish is incredibly shiny and looks fantastic; it also dries very quickly. The shine also lasted the full 6 days easily and other than that first chip there was minimal tip wear. The only issue as I said is that it does go gloopy as you get further through the bottle.

Rica’s “Glossy Glam” – My friend has been using this for a while now and gets lots of compliments on the way it looks. It is almost as shiny as “The Shield” and dries just as quickly. I personally haven’t gotten very far through a bottle yet but word of mouth is that it never goes gloopy so fingers crossed. Again the shine lasted the full 6 days and had minimal tip wear.

Barry M’s “Base + Top Coat” – Cheaper than the others but I’ve found out since buying this what the difference is between base and top coat and why 2 in 1s will never be as good. So much for money and space saving! A decent product but it didn’t look anything like as nice as the other two. It also took slightly longer to dry though it was still pretty quick. It did its job well too as there were no chips after 6 days and still only minimal tip wear.

The results – I’m a convert. You all know how much I love A England but this time it lost I’m afraid. Rica’s “Glossy Glam” is my new top coat of choice. I’ve since gotten rid of my gloopy remains of “The Shield” and refilled the bottle with Glossy Glam! That said, if it didn’t go gloopy I would go with The Shield every time as it does look slightly better.

If you want to try some Glossy Glam yourself check out Rica’s shop – she does some lovely polishes too including ones specifically for stamping along with some other nice little bits for your nails and beauty. Please comment if you’ve used any of these top coats or have any recommendations of your own, I’d love to hear from you!
